Week 4: Double Duty

We're back from vacation, and now is time to get serious. Because of the goose egg I laid last week, this week I'm gonna double up: both the dining room I was going to do last week, and the bathroom and adjoining back hall (aka: the mud room) for this week.

The dining room in this house is definitely the "first impression". It is the only room you can see if you peek through the windows on the front porch. And thanks to the design challenge of giant windows on two sides of a corner, you can also see this room from the sidewalk out front. It doesn't take too much imagination to figure out what guests are thinking when they see the dead plants in the window and a table so covered in clutter - magazines, crafts, school supplies, bills - that they can't even tell what color or shape the table is.

I guess the mud room would be the same thing for people coming in through the back door (although the shock of the garage might numb them to any clutter inside the house.) Still, one of my favorite pieces of furniture is back there. Affectionately known as "the blue thing", it is a piece of Mexican pine - painted bright blue - where bookbags, coats, purses and the like are supposed to get lovingly dropped off when we come in through the garage. Right now it looks more like a shrine to our past activities than a page from a Pottery Barn Catalog. Scattered around its base are coolers, book bags, gym bags, baseball caps, water guns, diaper bags (?), old shoes...I have to stop before the crying kicks in.

Ok. Time to get to it.
